Community Engagement

Engage, Inspire, Empower

This year we have been engaged in many projects aligned with our mission of Engage, Inspire, Empower. One of the largest scale experiences is the Superintendent’s Task Force for Middle Level Education. A broad based cross section of more than 140 community members, parents of current students, students, teachers, administrators and board members united together in support of six main areas of middle level education. We started our work in earnest during October, we met again in November and December, and we will meet again in January all with the aim of recommending Board action at the February Board meeting.

The Task Force is one of the “Big 5” focus areas:

  • Common Core State Standards
  • Charlotte Danielson Frameworks for Teaching/STEP Evaluation
  • Technology
  • Organizational Culture
  • Superintendent’s Task Force for Middle Level Education

The six areas studied by the Task Force are: Encore/Electives/Exploratory, World Languages, Social Emotional Learning, Gifted/Tracking, Fine Arts, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics)

At the Board of Education meeting tonight the Board will receive a detailed update on the progress and substance of work from each of the six subcommittees. The administration plans to make recommendations for action at the February Board meeting. The Task Force will meet again on January 27, 2014.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_engagementCommunity engagement refers to the process by which community benefit organizations and individuals build ongoing, permanent relationships for the purpose of applying a collective vision for the benefit of a community. The Superintendent’s Task Force for Middle Level Education is an example of community engagement about which we are very proud! Many voices, some in disagreement, coming together to advance the common good – in this case, the educational programming (in these six areas) at both middle schools in the community.

I’m excited to see how tonight’s update is received; I’m excited to see how the ultimate recommendations get crafted and presented; and most important, I’m so very proud to work in such an engaged community!
